We were in NYC in March and stayed at a friend's apartment. My friend and former professor of design, Jim Watson, will be featured in an episode. Jim 'rents' out his pad for a very reasonable price. He does have a rule that those who stay must leave a kitsch NYC souvenir. Click on the link and you can just make out our family's pic snuggly placed in a NEW YORK picture frame.
Decorating : Small Space : Uncluttered Chic in Small Spaces : Home & Garden Television

Do you have ADD?

Being a recent transplant from the Southwest, I've had to make quite a few changes. My diet... I drink sweet tea and eat lots of chicken (especially in Troy). My clothing... I don't like to wear shoes, sandals will do fine, think you. And new teams to watch.

Of, course I'll ALWAYS be a Sooner fan. No question. But I've made a change as far as pro baseball. I've been a Texas Ranger fan since I was a kid - when I lived in Dallas. The move to Troy has changed that. I've become an Atlanta Braves fan. Yes. It's true. I'm yelling at the TV questioning the bull-pen, cheering for Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones and reading stuff like this:

Atlanta Braves : News : Atlanta Braves News

Scanning Money and fair use... I've been told, as I'm sure you have, that scanning or copying money was wrong and will land your @ss in jail. Well, not really. Under fair use and copyright rules, you can copy money that belongs to you under certain guidelines. Just don't try to pass it off as real. Below is a video with more information. I've been away for quite awhile... sorry about that. I just got back from a week plus in New York and Trenton NJ. I had a busy work week grading AP portfolios for the ETS College Board. New York is a place that I believe every art, design and theater major should be required to visit. At least once. It is a rich city that begs exploration and oozes the arts. It is a SAFE city that my family has enjoyed visiting. For the artist and designer, museums and design firms are everywhere. The MoMA is amazing as well as the Whitney and Guggenheim.

Let's all go next Spring Break! We can stay real cheap in Hells Kitchen at Metro Baptist Church for $10 a night. Only two blocks from Time Square. Air fare... probably around $200. I think the trip can be done for around $600. Email me or respond if interested.

LET's GO!

Unusual Art

CHECK THIS OUT...

The issue of tracing and using grids

As part of one of my projects, I required students to use the tool of tracing. Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried.

2. When Chuck Norris plays Oregon Trail his family does not die from cholera or dysentery, but rather roundhouse kicks to the face. He also requires no wagon, since he carries the oxen, axels, and buffalo meat on his back. He always makes it to Oregon before you.

3. Rather than being birthed like a normal child, Chuck Norris instead decided to punch his way out of his mother's womb. Shortly thereafter he grew a beard.

4. Chuck Norris recently had the idea to sell his urine as a canned beverage. We know this beverage as Red Bull.

5. Chuck Norris built a time machine and went back in time to stop the JFK assassination. As Oswald shot, Chuck met all three bullets with his beard, deflecting them. JFK's head exploded out of sheer amazement.

6. Chuck Norris's girlfriend once asked him how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. He then shouted, "HOW DARE YOU RHYME IN THE PRESENCE OF CHUCK NORRIS!" and ripped out her throat. Holding his girlfriend's bloody throat in his hand he bellowed, "Don't f*ck with Chuck!" Two years and five months later he realized the irony of this statement and laughed so hard that anyone within a hundred mile radius of the blast went deaf.

7. Chuck Norris sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks and unparalleled martial arts ability. Shortly after the transaction was finalized, Chuck roundhouse kicked the devil in the face and took his soul back. The devil, who appreciates irony, couldn't stay mad and admitted he should have seen it coming. They now play poker every second Wednesday of the month.

8. To prove it isn't that big of a deal to beat cancer. Chuck Norris smoked 15 cartons of cigarettes a day for 2 years and aquired 7 different kinds of cancer only to rid them from his body by flexing for 30 minutes. Beat that, Lance Armstrong.

9. The original theme song to the Transformers was actually "Chuck Norris--more than meets the eye, Chuck Norris--robot in disguise," and starred Chuck Norris as a Texas Ranger who defended the earth from drug-dealing Decepticons and could turn into a pick-up. This was far too much awesome for a single show, however, so it was divided.

10. Chuck Norris was the fourth Wiseman. He brought baby Jesus the gift of "beard". Jesus wore it proudly to his dying day. The other Wisemen, jealous of Jesus' obvious gift favoritism, used their combined influence to have Chuck omitted from the Bible. Shortly after all three died of roundhouse kick related deaths.

11. Chuck Norris lives by only one rule: No fat Chicks.

12. When Chuck Norris's wife burned the turkey one Thanksgiving, Chuck said, "Don't worry about it honey," and went into his backyard. He came back five minutes later with a live turkey, ate it whole, and when he threw it up a few seconds later it was fully cooked and came with cranberry sauce. When his wife asked him how he had done it, he gave her a roundhouse kick to the face and said, "Never question Chuck Norris."

13. Chuck Norris once shot a German plane down with his finger, by yelling, "Bang!"

14. A man once asked Chuck Norris if his real name is "Charles". Chuck Norris did not respond, he simply stared at him until he exploded.

15. Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.

16. Chuck Norris can make a woman climax by simply pointing at her and saying "booya".

17. Chuck Norris once went to a frat party, and proceeded to roundhouse every popped collar in sight. He then drank three kegs and shit on their floor, just because he's Chuck Norris.

18. Before each filming of Walker: Texas Ranger, Chuck Norris is injected with five times the lethal dose of elephant tranquilzer. This is, of course, to limit his strength and mobility, in an attempt to lower the fatality rate of the actors he fights.

19. Chuck Norris took my virginity, and he will sure as hell take yours. If you're thinking to yourself, "That's impossible, I already lost my virginity.", then you are dead wrong.

20. Chuck Norris found out about Conan O'Brien's lever that shows clips from "Walker: Texas Ranger" and is working on a way to make it show clips of Norris having sex with Conan's wife.

21. The chief export of Chuck Norris is pain.

22. Chuck Norris doesn't have normal white blood cells like you and I. His have a small black ring around them. This signifies that they are black belts in every form of martial arts and they roundhouse kick the shit out of viruses. That's why Chuck Norris never gets ill.

23. Chuck Norris frequently signs up for beginner karate classes, just so he can "accidentally" beat the shit out of little kids.

24. Chuck Norris once tried to sue Burger King after they refused to put razor wire in his Whopper Jr., insisting that that actually is "his" way.

25. One of the greatest cover-ups of the last century was the fact that Hitler did not commit suicide in his bunker, but was in fact tea-bagged to death by Chuck Norris.

26. Chuck Norris punched a woman in the vagina when she didn't give him exact change.

27. Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for his left and right legs.

28. After much debate, President Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima rather than the alternative of sending Chuck Norris. His reasoning? It was more "humane".

29. If you can see Chuck Norris, he can see you. If you can't see Chuck Norris you may be only seconds away from death.

30. Chuck Norris ruins the endings of Harry Potter books for children who just bought one for the hell of it. When they start crying Chuck Norris calmly says, "I'll give you something to cry about," and roundhouse kicks them in the face.

HOW TO BE SMARTER and more creative!

I was going through my closet, making sure my jackets were clean when I found these written on a piece of paper that was shoved in a pocket. Some are from someone else and a few are from me. I think I wrote them down while in a meeting. I know the meeting wasn't about being smart. I'm sure I was bored.

1. Make new connections to things. Even if they have no relationship, creating connections to objects and ideas helps you discover new ways to solve problems. Make a game of it.

2. Juxtapose thoughts and objects to create new conclusions. This is related to number one... I just like to use the word 'juxtapose.'

3. Be willing to take risks. Yep. Art and design demands FREE thinkers. You can't be a free thinker if you are scared. BE A SAMURAI!! Take risks! Fail forward.

4. Observe everything and create associations with those observations.

5. Travel. Take a risk and leave Pike County for a weekend. Take a road trip with a few friends. Take out a little extra in student loans and go to Europe. Do it now. Do it before you get married and have children. See me if interested in traveling summer 2007 to Europe :)

6. Learn something new everyday. Acknowledge it.

7. Work puzzles. Crosswords are excellent vocabulary builders. (this one's not mine... Make a list of people who have invested in you and keep in touch with them.

9. Laugh at yourself. Yeah... How does it relate to art? Post your thoughts!

Bushido: The Samurai Code of Honor
The samurai were not mercenary warriors, roaming Japan and fighting for whatever warlord would pay them. They were bound to a specific lord, or daimyo, and also bound to their communities by duty and honor.
This code of honor is known as Bushido, and comes from the word bushi, which means "warrior." The Japanese word do means "the way." So Bushido means, "the way of the warrior." This code evolved from an earlier period, when samurai were archers and horsemen. The training and devotion needed to master these skills and bond with a horse led to kyuba no michi, "the way of the horse and bow."

Although Bushido is referred to as a code, it was not a formal set of rules that all samurai followed. In fact, Bushido changed greatly throughout Japanese history and even from one clan to the next. Bushido wasn't written down at all until the 17th century, after samurai had been in existence for centuries.

The first duty of a samurai was loyalty to his lord. Japan had a feudal system, in which a lord expected obedience from his vassals, who in turn received economic and military protection from the lord. If a lord couldn't count on absolute loyalty from his vassals, the entire system would have collapsed. This sense of loyalty and honor was often carried to extremes by the Japanese, who would fight to the death in a hopeless battle to protect their master's castle, or commit suicide if they felt they had disgraced their lord.

Samurai also had a duty of vengeance. Should the honor of his master be tarnished, or his master killed, a samurai was required to seek out and kill those responsible. One of the most famous samurai stories, "The 47 Ronin," or masterless samurai, is a tale of traditional samurai vengeance. During a period of peace, their lord was ordered to commit seppuku because of an altercation with another lord. Two years later, all 47 samurai invaded the lord's castle and killed him. They were arrested and forced to commit seppuku, not because they had fulfilled their duty of vengeance (this was expected), but because they had done it with a secret attack, which was considered dishonorable.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://troyartblog.blogspot.com/2005/11/samurai-how-does-it-relate-to-art-post.html' title='The Samurai! Many of you I meet in class on a daily basis. I'm challenging you to make art NOW! I'm tired of hearing excuses such as "I don't have time" or "other classes are keeping me busy." Do you realize that there are people out there that wish they had an ounce of the talent that you do? You probably were a lot like me in high school where everyone said, "oh, you're so talented, I wish I could paint like you." Paint D@mnit! For the sake of all things holy PAINT! Make art! Design! NOW IS THE TIME! Sleep is for sissy babies! Paint until you're sick, then vomit on a canvas and paint that. It is your responsibility to create because all those so-called non-creative people think they can't do it so you have to do it. SO do it! Adobe is working on software RIGHT NOW that will paint FOR people. All these non-creative types have to do is type some hogwash concept and Abobe will create the painting for these non-creative types. Are you going to let some computer take over your responsibility? THROW DOWN and DON'T STAND FOR IT!! I DARE YOU TO BE CREATIVE! Don't come to me and say, "oh, Mr. Skaggs, I read your blog and it made me want to paint so bad but I had to go to work." SHUT UP! Quit your job and PAINT!

First Fridays in Montgomery

I'm planning on going to First Fridays at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art in November... anyone who is interested in going with is welcome.
